The history of the 5 O’clock Tea Party
The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza. The first appearance of ‘afternoon tea’ was in the mid 19th century by Duchess Anna. The evening meal in her household, serving fashionably late at eight o’clock have left a long period of time between lunch and dinner. Therefore the Duchess have asked to bring a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to her room during the late afternoon. Hence this became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
